Have you ever been attracted to somebody of the same sex?
"Yeah, Debbie Harry. When I was a kid, I had a huge crush on her. She was just this sort of perfect pop icon. And maybe PJ Harvey a bit later on. But they were just crushes really, nothing overly sexual."
When were you last in a fight?
"I'm a lover, not a fighter! I'm not a big fighter, really. I honestly can't think of the last time I had a fight with someone. I just go all silent or I cry if I'm really fucked off, rather than shouting."
When was the last time you stole something?
"I nicked a bra when I was 13, that's the one and only time I nicked anything from a shop. I nicked a Christian Dior bra. But that's about it. I do get tempted, especially with shops that charge a lot of money. A lot of shops actually mark the price up on things, knowing that 10% of the stock is going to get nicked. So seeing as it's allowed for, I'd be most tempted to steal things that are ridiculous prices in shops, even though it's only cost fuck-all to put together, and then they're charging hundreds of pounds for it. But I just dread the tap on my shoulder too much to go through with it."
When did you last cry in front of another person?
"I was actually in tears after a gig on the last tour. I cried in front of the band in Glasgow, cos my guitar wouldn't work, and it was just such a shite gig. I just felt really kind of ashamed. And I think just with all the adrenaline of being on stage, when I walked off I just burst into tears, and felt a bit stupid."
Do you believe in ghosts and spirits, and would you be prepared to spend the night in a house that was supposedly haunted?
"Yeah, I do believe in ghosts and I wouldn't go anywhere near a house that was supposed to be haunted. My mum's originally from Russia, and my grandma was always having visions of things. In fact, our house got burgled a few years ago, and my grandma woke up saying she'd had a vision of my dead uncle - but it was actually just the burglar who had been in her room. But my whole family believes in ghosts and weird shit, so I've been brought up believing in it."
Who do you admire most and in what way does that person inspire you?
"I admire my mum the most. I aspire to be the way she is, because she takes no shit from anyone. I think that's pretty good. I'm getting there!"
Would you be willing to go into a slaughterhouse and kill a cow?
"No, absolutely not. I despise cruelty to animals. For years, I wouldn't wear leather shoes, then I sort of felt I'd done my bit and I wear leather now. But I avoid eating meat. I was completely veggie for about 15 years, and then I had a bacon sarnie. There's something about bacon. But i rarely eat meat, just if I'm drunk I'll occasionally have a bite of somebody's Kentucky Fried Chicken."
What has been the biggest failure in your life?
"Probably staying tidy. I'd love to live in a really tidy place, but I'm utterly incapable of keeping my life tidy. I'm just one of those people who does a massive clearout every so often and then really, really tries to be tidy, and then within days there's just stuff all over the place."
What's the worst psychological torture you can imagine suffering?
"Being forced to listen to music I don't like, playing loudly. Probably being forced to listen to Radio 1 all day long. It's alright in the evening, but daytime radio 1 is frightening."
What are your most compulsive habits?
"Smoking cigarettes. And I wash all the time. I absolutely love having baths. I'm a compulsive bath-taker. And I'm quite a superstitious person, too. I really have to force myself to walk on the cracks in the pavement and shit like that. Just stupid stuff really."
Would you accept a million pounds to leave the country and never set foot in it again?
"Yeah, absolutely. I'd just take the money and go and buy myself a nice house on a beach somewhere. I wouldn't mind doing that anyway! If anyone wants to give me a million pounds, I'd be quite happy never to return. I'd take the cat with me and that would be that."
If aliens arrived and asked you to go and visit their planet for 5 years, would you go?
"No. I'm a bit scared of the unknown, and I'm not a big sci-fi enthusiast. And I can't imagine wanting to be experimented on."
